What is a free download gate?
A free download gate (also called a fan gate) lets an artist upload audio or a ZIP and require fans to complete chosen actions before the file unlocks. On TimbrGate, fans can complete actions across major streaming and social platforms you choose - including SoundCloud, YouTube, Spotify, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Discord, and more - plus email sign-up. SoundCloud and YouTube actions can be performed through those platforms' official APIs after the fan authorizes once, so those steps are confirmed rather than honour-system only. Use a gate when
- 1. You have a file fans want (unreleased track, stems, sample/preset pack, remix parts).
- 2. You want a specific action (follow, subscribe, email) before the download.
- 3. You will share the gate URL where fans already expect a free download.
Skip or rethink a gate when
- 1. You only need to route listeners to Spotify, Apple Music and the rest, with no file. Use a smart link.
- 2. The unlock is not a real file fans value. Empty promises hurt completion and trust.
- 3. You need every platform action API-verified. TimbrGate confirms SoundCloud and YouTube via official APIs. Other platforms use guided steps and TimbrGate does not take fan passwords. Do not claim universal verification.

Is it really free, or is there a hidden catch?
Free to start. Ads on some of our own articles and guides keep the lights on. Your gate pages carry no ads: below the download there is only one small link inviting fans to make their own gate.
Do you check that fans actually followed?
Honestly: on most platforms, no one can. Fans click through to follow on each platform in a guided step-by-step wizard, complete each action one by one, then access the download. We never ask for their passwords. SoundCloud and YouTube are the exceptions - fans authorize once and we perform the follow, like, repost or subscribe through the platform's own official API, so those actions are genuinely confirmed.
What file types and sizes are supported?
Audio files (WAV, MP3, FLAC, AIFF, M4A, OGG) and ZIP archives. Put stems, sample packs, presets, PDFs or artwork in a ZIP. There is no app-imposed size limit: files upload straight to cloud storage, so full WAV albums and big stem packs work.
Can I see which actions convert the best?
Yes. The built-in analytics dashboard shows visits, downloads, conversion rates, and which social actions perform best - so you can optimize which combination you use next time.
Can I customize the look of my download page?
Yes, through your artwork. Upload your cover and the page is built around it: the cover sits front and center and a blurred version of it becomes the page background, so every gate looks like its own release. You also set the title, the artist name and your own URL slug. There is no separate color picker.
Can I password-protect a gate in addition to social actions?

Download gate vs smart link - which should I create?
Gate = file unlock after actions. Smart link = route to streaming apps with no file required. Many artists use both: smart link for the public release, gate for a free bonus pack.
